Over and over again during the course of putting this show together, I've been asked, why DUCK? What does it mean? What's the point? With luck, the show itself answers these questions. Browsing through the amazing variations on a simple theme, you'll hopefully get a glimpse of how truely imaginative, rich and vital our comic artist culture is today. If you come away inspired then you'll understand the importance of the MoCCA mission. Imagine the wonder of school children as they are lead through a gallery of such imagination and versatility and the thoughts they would walk away with. Picture a show such as DUCK being a talking point and favorite memory taken away from a New York day in the city. With the support of state and city officials already gathered by MoCCA, the reality of just such a place is not far away, but additional support is needed to see this vision through. The artists represented here have all eagerly donated their talents to just such a vision. MoCCA asks for your support as well.
How the show came about:
Towards the end of 2002, I started asking around if anyone would be interested in helping out MoCCA by contributing to an online exhibit. The museum didn't have permanent exhibition space yet, so hanging work was out of the question. But we did have a vital web site, so why not put on a show here where people could visit a virtual gallery and get a taste of what a real MoCCA exhibition will be like? The response I received was overwhelming. Inspired, I asked some top art directors to recommend their favorite humorous illustrators and comics artists. From the lists they provided, I invited the most mentioned pros to participate in DUCK. Since then, it's been like having the best box seat at a home run derby. All I had to do was sit back and enjoy the show.
Thanks to all the great artists that made this exhibit happen, and thanks to everyone who currently supports MoCCA, both financially and with their time and efforts.
